Leucaena Leucocephala "White Leadtree, River Tamarind"
Leucaena leucocephala is a fast-growing mimosoid tree native to southern Mexico and northern Central America and is now naturalized throughout the tropics including parts of Asia. Common names include jumbay, white leadtree, river tamarind, ipil-ipil, tan tan, and white popinac. Leucaena leucocephala is used for a variety of purposes, such as fencing, soil fertility, fire wood, fiber, and livestock fodder. A lovely relative of the "mimosas", sprays of fragrant, flowers open in very early spring at the ends of branches clad in delicate fern-like leaves. This plant was promoted as a "miracle tree" because of its worldwide success as a long-lived, highly nutritious forage tree. As well as forage, leucaena can provide firewood, timber, human food, green manure, shade and erosion control.
